Data sonification and sound visualization
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article describes a collaborative project between researchers in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory and the Computer Music Project of the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. The project focuses on the use of sound for the exploration and analysis of complex data sets in scientific computing. The article addresses digital sound synthesis in the context of DIASS (Digital Instrument for Additive Sound Synthesis) and sound visualization in a virtual-reality environment by means of M4CAVE. It describes the procedures and preliminary results of some experiments in scientific sonification and sound visualization. While most computational scientists routinely use visual imaging techniques to explore and analyze large data sets, they tend to be much less familiar with the use of sound. Yet, sound signals carry significant amounts of information and can be used advantageously to increase the bandwidth of the human/computer interface. The project described in this article focuses on scientific sonification—the faithful rendering of scientific data in sounds—and the visualization of sounds in a virtual-reality environment. The project, which grew out of an effort to apply the latest supercomputing technology to the process of music composition (see Box 1), is a joint collaboration between Argonne National Laboratory (ANL, Mathematics and Computer Science Division) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC, Computer Music Project). Digital sound synthesis is addressed in Section 1; the discussion centers on DIASS (Digital Instrument for Additive Sound Synthesis). Section 2 describes some experiments in scientific sonification. Sound visualization in a virtual-reality (VR) environment is discussed in Section 3; here, the main tool is M4CAVE, a program to visualize sounds from a score file. Section 4 contains some general observations about the project.

PROMUSE: A System for Multi-Media Data Presentation of Protein Structural Alignments
We present and evaluate PROMUSE: an integrated visualization/sonification system for analyzing pairwise protein structural alignments (superpositions of two protein structures in three-dimensional space). We also explore how the use of sound can enhance the perception and recognition of specific aspects of the local environment at given positions in the represented molecular structure. Sonifica...
متن کاملAn Illustrated Analysis of Sonification for Scientific Visualisation
This paper presents an analysis of progress in the use of sound as a tool in support of visualisation and gives an insight into its development and future needs. Special emphasis is given to the use of sound in Scientific and Engineering Applications. A system developed to support surface data presentation and interaction by using sound is presented and discussed.
متن کاملHow Musical are Images? From sound Representation to Image Sonification: an Eco Systemic Approach
Although sound visualization and image sonification have been extensively used for scientific and artistic purposes, their combined effect is rarely considered. In this paper, we propose the use of an iterative visualization/sonification approach as a sound generation mechanism. In particular, we visualize sounds using a textural self-similarity representation, which is then analysed to generat...

متن کاملRaster Scanning: A New Approach to Image Sonification, Sound Visualization, Sound Analysis And Synthesis
Raster scanning is a technique for generating or recording a video image by means of a line-by-line sweep, tantamount to a data mapping scheme between one and two dimensional spaces. While this geometric structure has been widely used on many data transmission and storage systems as well as most video displaying and capturing devices, its application to audio related research or art is rare. In...
